Localisation -What is it?

An explanation of the term "Localisation" (or Localization - American misspelling). This refers to the translation of software, web sites, documents, mulitmedia, etc for foreign markets.

As the credit crunch bites, more and more companies are realising that they have to open new markets and this requires providing their products in foreign languages. Localisation is the process by which this is maximised. I will be producing a series of articles which highlight the benefits and pitfalls of localisation. The aim will be to inform producers on ways in which they can get the best Return on Investment and to show how easily this can be achieved IF localisation is taken into account at the earliest possible time in a company's plans.
